Revision is one option among several. Depending on the cause, a specialist may first consider medical treatment (including anti-obesity medication), structured nutritional and behavioural support, or endoscopic management. Surgery to convert or revise a previous procedure is generally reserved for a clearly identified anatomical problem, severe reflux, or an inadequate response that cannot be addressed safely with less invasive options.
The type of the original operation matters. A sleeve with severe reflux, a band or ring causing problems, and inadequate weight loss after a bypass are each assessed differently, and the safest next step depends on current endoscopic and nutritional findings.
